Answering some common myths around hypnotherapy...

I am a registered clinical hypnotherapist now, but I was not always "sure" about hypnosis. Between stage hypnosis for entertainment and movies and shows that portray a cartoonish or even malevolent image of hypnosis, a hesitancy towards hypnotherapy can kind of make sense. On the other hand, I also knew it existed as a real practice and heard first hand stories from people for whom it worked.

You might be in the same place I was when considering hypnotherapy. I was curious, but I also had some fears. When I emailed my hypnotherapist for the first time I didn't ask her if she would make me cluck like a chicken, but I did ask her about more than one question from the following myths I list.

Hypnotherapy is mind control

The Truth: Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process where you remain fully in control. A hypnotherapist will guide you with suggestions, but it’s entirely up to you whether you take them on or not. No one can override your moral or ethical boundaries in hypnosis. It’s also important to know that hypnotherapy works best when the desire to change comes from within—if someone else is pressuring you into it, the process is unlikely to be effective.

Hypnosis is just like being asleep

The Truth: Hypnosis is a state of focused awareness, not sleep. While the body may feel deeply relaxed, the mind remains alert and receptive. It can feel more like daydreaming or being engrossed in a good book or show.

You can get stuck in hypnosis

The Truth: You can’t get “stuck” in hypnosis—it’s a completely natural state that you move in and out of every day. Think about it: have you ever driven somewhere and realized you don’t remember the trip? Or maybe you’ve been reading a book and noticed you zoned out for a few pages? Those are everyday examples of hypnosis. In a session, if something unexpected happens (like the internet cutting out during an online session), you’ll simply return to full awareness or drift into a restful sleep and wake up naturally later.

Hypnotherapy is just for quitting smoking, losing weight or phobias

The Truth: While hypnotherapy is great for those goals, it’s so much more versatile! It can help with anxiety, stress, sleep issues, phobias, performance improvement, managing chronic pain and personal growth and much more.

You can't be hypnotized if you are strong-willed or analytical

The Truth: Hypnosis works best for people who are curious, willing to participate, and able to focus. In fact, creative, intelligent, and highly motivated individuals often respond the best because they can tap into a deeper, more focused part of their mind.

Hypnotherapy only works if you "believe in it".

The Truth: You don’t need to believe in some magical power for hypnotherapy to work. There is solid science behind hypnotherapy's ability to leverage the brain's neuroplasticity - its ability to reorganize itself and make new connections. This physical rewiring is what makes the emotional and behavioural changes last.

Hypnotherapy is just a quick fix

The Truth: Hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for change. While some people may feel immediate benefits from one session, most issues clients come with are ones that are multi-layered and developed over time and will require multiple sessions to achieve lasting change. While often faster than traditional talk therapy, Hypnotherapy is still a process and journey, not an instant magic cure.

You will reveal your deepest secrets under hypnosis

The Truth: Hypnosis doesn’t compel you to disclose anything you don’t want to. Clients are aware of what they’re saying or not saying and can even choose to remain silent if they wish. Your privacy and autonomy are respected during sessions and after.

Hypnotherapy can help you forget memories forever

The Truth: Hypnosis can help clients reframe and process the emotions tied to memories, but it doesn’t permanently remove memories. If hypnotherapy actually did that, any kind of relief would be temporary at best. The emotions attached to that suppressed memory would likely resurface in different ways. The goal in hypnotherapy is understanding and healing, not erasing memories.

Hypnotherapy Works for Everyone**

The Truth: While hypnotherapy is highly effective, individual responsiveness vary. Factors like openness, trust, honesty with oneself and the ability to relax influence outcomes. Client motivation, rapport with therapist, and the right match with the techniques all play a part. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

**Hypnotherapy, however, is not recommended for people diagnosed with mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, that make it very challenging to differentiate states of consciousness. Please consult with your mental health provider if you have any medical concerns around hypnotherapy.
