So, you’ve read about how a session
typically flows, and now you might be wondering:

“Okay, but how does hypnotherapy actually work?”

It has to do with something called neuroplasticity – your brain’s amazing ability to change, adapt and even rewire itself throughout your life. We used to think that neural pathways in the brain were fixed and virtually unchangeable after childhood, but that’s not true, they remain flexible.

Are some pathways currently well-worn and automatic?

Absolutely.

...AND they are sitting right next to potential new neural pathways literally waiting to be created.

This means it is physically possible to change behavioural and emotional patterns, learn new skills, and even heal from emotional trauma, no matter your age.

The ability to change is naturally built inside of you.

Traditional talk therapy is a wonderful tool that can teach you skills that help you identify those patterns and reactions in real-time, and then pivot to consciously choose a different response.

With enough time and practice, those repeated new choices create new pathways and changed behaviours and habits.

But let’s be honest: catching automatic patterns in the moment can be tricky, especially when emotions are running high or you’re feeling tired.

That’s where hypnotherapy shines. You might think of it as a neuroplasticity shortcut to rewiring your brain and forming new healthier patterns.

It kind of works in the opposite direction of talk therapy. In the relaxed and deeply focussed state of hypnosis, you create new neural pathways and connections, that you can later consciously reinforce.

This isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s backed by science.

Brain imaging during hypnosis shows altered activity and connectivity in areas of the brain associated with focus, imagination, and emotional regulation.

Using a variety of techniques, hypnotherapy works with the body’s natural process to change unhelpful patterns and create new ones that align with the life you want.

One of my favourite things to hear are the stories clients share of times they were bracing for an old emotional reaction or fear to show up, only to have a moment of genuine confusion, followed by feelings of relief or joy when they realize—"Wait... ...it's not there anymore!”

It’s an incredible feeling to realize how powerful and adaptable your mind truly is.
